Depending on the options chosen on the page labelled 'Microsoft Exchange Server Connection Configuration' within the Import Export Tool, a different protocol is used to access Microsoft Exchange:
MAPI - Messaging Application Programming Interface

- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or 2007 & Login as current user
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 or 2010 or 2013 & Login as current user
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 (MAPI /Outlook) & Use other credentials
- GFI MailArchiver 2013
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 or 2007 & Login as current user
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 or 2010 & Login as current user
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 & Use other credentials
EWS - Exchange Web Services
- GFI MailArchiver 2014 or newer
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 or 2010 or 2013 & Use other credentials
- Microsoft Exchange Online (Office 365) & Use other credentials
- GFI MailArchiver 2013
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 or 2010 & Use other credentials
WebDav - Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning
- GFI MailArchiver 2014 or newer

Notes:
- When using the option "Login as current user" the user who runs the tool itself requires access to the mailboxes from where emails are to be exported
- If calendar items are to be exported MAPI protocol must be used
